The Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) was founded as Kenya Basketball Association in 1965. It was registered as Kenya Basketball Federation on 18th February 1972 under the Societies Act as a non-profit organization for the benefit of all basketball stakeholders. It was again registered on 24th May 2018 under the Sports Act 2013.
KBF is the national umbrella organization of all basketball clubs, commissions and associations whose core business is to control, direct, regulate, and supervise; and to promote, encourage and advance the sport of basketball and its practice by both gender of all age groups, regardless of any disabilities through:
- Provision of technical training for the players, coaches and referees.
- Organizing local and international competitions.
- Creating forums for the exchange of experiences and ideas.

Structure of the federation
Kenya Basketball Federation is administered and managed through the following divisions;
- The Governing Council.
- The National Executive Committee.
- Working Committees.
- County Branches
- Conference Branches
The GC is the supreme decision-making organ of the Federation and its membership is nationwide with representation from each county branch.
The NEC is charged with the day-to-day affairs of the federation and its members are elected every four years by the GC.
The NEC appoints the Working Committees for any specific purpose deemed proper for the sport of basketball. Members of the committees need to have necessary requisites and experience.

- League and Competition committee
- Discipline and Arbitration committee
- Youth and Development committee
- Technical committee.
- Fundraising Board.
